Hezbollah drives tensions on Israel’s north border: A list

Over the last several months Hezbollah has been increasing tensions with Israel.

July 20

A local mayor claims he is bulldozing a new road near the Blue Line near Mount Dov, at the village of Kfar Shuba (كفرشوبا) not far from Mount Hermon; the area he is moving the road into hasn’t been used since 1978 reports say. The event was orchestrated with pro-Iran media such as Al-Mayadeen and Al-Manar and journalists came to watch and tear gas was fired.

July 19

IDF Chief of Staff visit to northern border filmed from Lebanon. Israel’s IDF said that “The Chief of the General Staff, LTG Herzi Halevi, visited the 91st Galilee Division this evening (Tuesday), together with the Commanding Officer of the Northern Command, MG Ori Gordin, the Commanding Officer of the 91st Galilee Division, BG Shay Klapper, and brigade commanders.  LTG Halevi conducted a situational assessment with the commanders, during which he was presented with the activity of IDF forces along the Blue Line, including their reinforcement. LTG Halevi referred to the readiness and vigilance of the forces, and the importance of maintaining the routine daily lives of the residents of the north.

IDF throws smoke grenades near border. Jerusalem Post: “IDF soldiers threw two smoke grenades near Lebanese soldiers and UNIFIL personnel near Kfarchouba along the Lebanese-Israeli border on Wednesday, according to Lebanese reports.”

Arab News: “A Lebanese MP and several journalists suffered minor burns after Israeli troops launched smoke and tear gas grenades at the group during a visit to the border of Shebaa Farms, a disputed strip of territory near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, on Saturday. The media delegation, accompanied by MP Qassem Hashem, advanced to within a few meters of Israeli troops before the soldiers took up combat positions and warned the group against coming any closer.”

The Israeli Defense Forces said on Saturday that “IDF soldiers fired warning shots and used riot dispersal means in order to distance a number of suspects who crossed the Blue Line in the area of Mount Dov, after they refused to withdraw from the area. The suspects returned to Lebanese territory.” Lebanese MPs visit border area. Qassem Hashem, a member of the Development and Liberation Bloc in the Lebanese Parliament, on the outskirts of the Shebaa Farms. Later MPs say they will continue to go.

The Jerusalem Post noted “IDF soldiers used warning shots and crowd dispersal measures to distance at least twenty Lebanese citizens who crossed around 80 meters into Israeli territory in the isolated Mount Dov enclave on Saturday morning.

IDF : “A number of suspects approached the border fence with Lebanon earlier today (Wed) and tried to sabotage the barrier area,” the statement said the IDF were able to quickly identify the assailants and “used measures to keep them away.” I24 wrote “Sources told i24NEWS that 15 Hezbollah supporters were on the border, and Israeli security forces were attempting to push them back. Crowd dispersal methods were reportedly used, resulting in three wounded.” This took place near Metulla.

The National; Israel fired a barrage of missiles at Lebanon after a rocket was launched from south Lebanon towards the border on Thursday morning. A Lebanese Army source confirmed the rocket attack, telling The National at least 15 missiles were launched from Israel. They landed in Kafr Shuba, but caused no injuries or damage to buildings.

Reuters “reported Thursday morning that two rockets was fired from southern Lebanon toward Israeli territory after an explosion was heard in the area around 8:00 a.m. Meanwhile, a large military presence is visible in the area of the village of Ghajar, located near the border with Lebanon…the IDF said in a statement that an investigation revealed that a launch was made from Lebanese territory that exploded near the border, in Israeli territory and that the IDF retaliated by fired dozens of shells into Lebanon toward the area of the rocket launch.”

AP: “Israeli soldiers fired tear gas to disperse scores of protesters who pelted the troops with stones along the border with Lebanon Friday, leaving some Lebanese demonstrators and troops suffering breathing problems. The tension on the edge of the Lebanese border village of Kfar Chouba began earlier this week over the Israeli military digging in the area that Lebanon claims. On Wednesday, a Lebanese villager tried to stop an Israeli bulldozer from digging a trench along the border. Once the villager’s legs were covered with sand as the bulldozer moved ahead, U.N. peacekeepers jumped in and convinced the driver to move back. Videos of the elderly man with his legs stuck in the sand dune went viral on social media.”

AP: “Friday’s strikes in southern Lebanon came a day after militants fired nearly three dozen rockets from there at Israel, wounding two people and causing some property damage. The Israeli military said it targeted installations of Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, in southern Lebanon.”
